After 40+ years as a vascular surgeon, what did you see happening to patients with chronic venous disease that frustrated you most? Was there a specific patient or moment that crystallized the problem for you?
The treatment of venous disease of the lower limbs, depending on the case, includes several procedures, but only one is common to all situations - SLEEPING WITH YOUR LEGS ELEVATED - After several years of clinical practice, I clearly realised how difficult it was to provide this simple solution, in an effective way, creating a perfectly inclined plane in the beds of patients with CVI, so that they could control the symptoms of heaviness, discomfort and oedema in their lower limbs at home, without damaging the lumbar spine.
Can you take us back to the moment the idea for UZit first came to you? Where were you, and what were you thinking about?
For this reason—which affects one in two people in the Western world—I spent years searching for an effective solution. I imagined a platform that could be placed under the mattress, but existing options were simply too large and heavy to be commercially viable.
Then, in 2022, I woke up in the middle of the night with a breakthrough idea: an inflatable device that could achieve the same goal. I immediately contacted a specialized inflatable design company, and by 2023 we had the first working prototype —UZit.
The only remaining challenge was the noise from the filling compressor. After extensive testing and improvements, that issue has now been resolved, and production of the inflatable version is ready to begin.
However, in the summer of 2025—while the inflatable was still in final development—another idea struck me: the same concept, but made entirely of foam. It would be lightweight, easy to vacuum-pack, and completely free of any mechanical or technical complications. I reached out to a Portuguese manufacturer, and within just two months they delivered a brilliant technical solution: UZit Foam.
Was there a particular patient case that pushed you from frustration to invention? What was their situation?
No. Not at all.
Just the huge number of people with chronic symptoms that are sometimes moderate in intensity but which insidiously and persistently disrupt their quality of life.
The insight that a full-body inclined plane — rather than local leg elevation — would protect the lumbar spine is genuinely novel. How did you arrive at this?
Discomfort and even lower back pain were recurring problems for all users of wedges or electric platforms to raise their lower limbs, but in reality this was not taken seriously by the medical community! It was obvious that only an inclined plane covering the entire body, with a tolerable slope percentage for daily use (≈ 5%) could solve the problem! But how could this be achieved in a simple way.
Your patients with chronic venous disease suffer quietly for years. What would it mean to you if UZit became a standard part of how this condition is managed globally?
On the one hand, enormous satisfaction at having made a decisive contribution to this solution. On the other hand, great perplexity at how a solution that now seems so simple consumed thousands of hours of work by several people over several years to get there!
You spent your career operating on veins. Now, at this stage, you're trying to prevent those operations from ever being necessary. How does that feel?
It is not scientifically correct to think that using UZit will prevent the appearance of varicose veins in the lower limbs. However, it undoubtedly minimizes the symptoms associated with this condition, both before and after surgery. However, the advantages of UZit are not limited to patients with varicose veins in the lower limbs. They are evident in all degrees of CVI, as well as in muscle recovery after physical activity, particularly in high-performance athletes.
If you could speak directly to the vascular surgeons and vein specialists around the world right now, what would you tell them about why they should pay attention to UZit?
I would say so — Never devalue something very important that I began by saying — The treatment of venous disease of the lower limbs, depending on the case, includes several procedures, but only one is common to all situations - SLEEPING WITH YOUR LEGS ELEVATED . Only UZit allows you to achieve this goal on a daily basis without causing problems in the lumbar spine, which lead patients to systematically abandon this procedure in the short and medium term.
